Timothy Kendrick, CEO of BW, recently emphasized the power of technology in addressing global food security at an event filled with industry leaders. "We’re not just ivory tower thinkers but dirt under the fingernails implementers," Kendrick noted, highlighting BW’s innovative solutions like the seven-axis plasma cutter and resilient multi-peak greenhouses. The event, themed "(Re)imagine," aims to inspire discussions on various topics including social welfare, business, and the future of Abbotsford.

Four Abbotsford projects are receiving $1.6 million in agritech grants from the provincial government. The funds, part of StrongerBC: BC’s Economic Recovery Plan, will support innovations in precision agriculture, greenhouse technology, wastewater processing, and blockchain-based food transparency, aiding companies like i-Open Technologies, BW Global, Trident Processes, and Bakerview EcoDairy.

Thirteen B.C. agritech firms, including BW Global Structures, are receiving $658,000 in government grants through the B.C. Centre for Agritech Innovation, matched by industry to total $2 million. The B.C. government and the BC Innovation Council (BCIC) have welcomed new partner Bioenterprise BC to the BC Acceleration Network (BCAN) to support the growth of innovative agri-tech businesses in the province. Bioenterprise BC will provide agri-tech entrepreneurs with business plan assistance, market analysis, funding guidance, and networking.

The federal government reaffirmed its commitment to supporting business technological innovation in Abbotsford. MP Ed Fast highlighted significant funding, over $840,000, provided to nine local companies through the Industrial Research Assistance Program and Digital Technology Adoption Pilot Program, aiming to enhance Canada's global competitiveness in innovation and business investment.

The Province has provided $478,277 to support the heavy industrial manufacturing training program, which is offered in partnership with Chilliwack-based Mussell Crane Manufacturing and local employers. This program will train participants in skills such as forklift and crane operation, basic rigging, fall protection, and manufacturing safety.

More than 35 experts from around North America will be in Kelowna to share their knowledge and opinions about increasing food supply security as part of the Nov. 14-15, 2016, BC Agrifood and Seafood Conference: Growing the Future Together. Conference speakers include agri-entrepreneurs, tech leaders, and policy leaders.
